Top picks for late summer

  • Last of the summer wine in Alsace

    Nîmes, Barcelona, Palma, Mallorca, Paris

Grape harvesting season is the best time to visit the Rhine. You'll find age-old harvesting traditions as you sip your way along the Burgundy wine trail through the vineyards of Alsace.

  • Sailing to Sardinia

Golfo Aranci, Livorno, Basel, Florence, Nice, Alghero

In late summer, blue-zone Sardinia slows even further. With fewer crowds, island life unfolds in piazzas, fishermen head out in calm waters, and the Med invites quiet swims, warm from summer gone.

  • Dalmatian coast and islands

Zagreb, Korčula, Opatija, Basel, Graz, Mljet, Ulm, Split, Dubrovnik, Venice

As late summer settles over Dalmatia, sunsets become a highlight. From Split’s Marjan Hill to Dubrovnik’s city walls, the Adriatic glows with golden hues, offering unforgettable views each evening.

  • Surf and turf in San Sebastian

Santiago de Compostela, Bordeaux, Barcelona, Lyon, Burgos, San Sebastián

September marks the start of surfing season. San Sebastian gives a whole new meaning to surf and turf, where days of catching waves give way to evenings hopping across Spain's best pintxos bars.

  • Tuscany's peach region

Strasbourg, Lecce, Lugano, Modena, Zürich, Bari, Monopoli, Trani

Sink your teeth into the Tuscan peach region of Londa, at its ripest come September. The Pesca regina di Londa stretches out across the Florence province, home to the nearly-extinct Londa peach.

  • Marseille and the Riviera

    Ajaccio, Bastia, Marseille, Cassis, Calvi

See out summer's end on the Côte d'Azur for a hit of heat and glamour once the crowds have gone. Marseille is an easy-to-reach smorgasbord of cool neighbourhoods, arty enclaves and Riviera charm.

Journal: Why take the local train?

When it comes to rail travel in Europe, sleek high-speed services and famous tourist trains often steal the spotlight. But all offer the chance to soak up views, explore lesser-visited towns and support local infrastructure

Read on to find out why local trains might just be the best way to travel in Europe.
