Byway journal: In search of 'the other side' of Tuscany

Quiet trips

  • A journey on the Caledonian sleeper train will see you waking up in bonny Scotland before boarding the West Highland line to the wild Trossachs.

  • Sunsets of the Algarve

Bordeaux, Barcelona, Madrid, Faro, San Sebastián, Seville, Paris

The Algarve shows off some of Europe's best sunsets - and is an off-season delight. For true remoteness, Ilha Deserta (meaning 'deserted island') off the coast of Faro is a haven for migrating birds.

  • Escape the light pollution of the city, and bask in the celestial glow of an official Dark Sky Reserve. The Eryri National Park in Snowdonia is the UK's largest.

  • Twitching on Tuscan marshes

    Turin, Grosseto, Milan, Florence, Paris

Maremma is both the wilder and quieter side of Tuscany. Against the backdrop of the Monti dell'Uccellina, ospreys fly and flamingoes stand on one leg in the still pools of the Diaccia Botrona.

  • Witness the aurora borealis

Amsterdam, Osnabrück, Hamburg, Helsinki, Rovaniemi, Aachen, Stockholm

A private sleeper train carriage sets the tone. Then, northward to the Arctic Circle. Wonder at the northern lights, and get under the skin of local foraging traditions and Finnish folklore.

  • The art of Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing, awaits in ancient woodland surrounding the market town of Arundel in the South Downs National Park, Sussex.
