Basel
The Swiss city of Basel, located on the border of France and Germany, consistently ranks highest of all the cities in Europe for quality of life. Even as a visitor it's easy to see why, with its vibrant old town set around the Rhine River, over 40 museums and galleries, and easy access to hiking routes and outdoor activities.

Basel's cathedral is a wonderful place to enjoy a moment of peace and quiet. It was built between 1019 and 1500 in late Romanesque and Gothic styles and the interior is full of curious architectural details. Afterwards, head to the Pfalz viewpoint behind the Minster for fantastic views across the Rhine to the old town.
The Dreiländerbrücke (Three Countries Bridge) crosses the Rhine and is the world’s longest pedestrian and cyclist suspension bridge at 248m long. It links the German town of Weil am Rhein in southern Baden, and Huningue in Alsace, France. Take the tram to the bridge and visit three countries in five-minutes!

The IOC headquarters were established in Lausanne in 1914 and the museum followed in 1993. It's a great for adults and kids; there are temporary and permanent exhibits plus displays that include medals, documents and films. The lake view is pretty special, too.
The Cathedral of Notre Dame of Lausanne is a vast gothic church on Cité hill that dates back to the 12th century. Night watchmen still call out the hours from the belfry from 10pm to 2am each night.
