Groningen

Groningen

Groningen is a small yet lively student city in the northern Netherlands. Walkable and compact, the city is pleasant and easy to explore thanks to pedestrianised streets and green canal towpaths. You won't find a host of tourist attractions (although the central market square is well worth a visit), but you'll see for yourself why local residents and students rate Groningen so highly as a great place to live.

City Hotel Groningen

This modern hotel is located near to the canal and is a 14-minute walk from the station. The rooms are functional and comfortable, and there's a bar and terrace.

Recommendations

  • Climb the 250-odd steps in this 15th-century tower by Grote Market to get sweeping views over the city. Its bells ring every 15 minutes, so be prepared to cover your ears if you’re at the top when they toll.

  • Following the routes of Groningen’s canals will lead you to some of the city’s most interesting and picturesque spots, and give you some insights into its maritime past. Hoge der A, along the west edge of the Binnenstad district, is easily accessible and lined with historic buildings.

  • You can’t miss the vibrant buildings of the Groninger Museum, on the southern edge of the Binnenstad district. The museum’s exhibitions are as eclectic as its architecture, but mostly focus on modern and contemporary art.

Oslo

Capital of contemporary art, rising star of gastronomy and home to a dance-until-dawn nightlife: Oslo is a city where a waterfront stroll in the nordic sun feels just as luxurious as sipping an Aquavit at a rooftop bar. Thanks to a handful of sprawling parks, you won't need to go far for a dose of natural beauty, but the Oslofjord's islands make a wonderful day's excursion.

Bergen

Despite being Norway's second-largest city, UNESCO-listed Bergen has retained its small, fishing-town feel with its colourful wooden huts and small fishing boats that jostle up against the harbour. It's known as the 'gateway to the fjords' but you won't want to rush exploring the Bryggen waterfront and scouting out the best place to warm up over waffles or potato dumplings.
