Rotterdam
Home to the largest seaport in Europe, Rotterdam is the second-largest city in Holland. Having been destroyed after the First World War, Rotterdam is now characterised by its striking modern architecture with integrated green spaces, and is recognised for its resourceful approach to everything from innovative community spaces to a thriving sustainable food scene.

Recommendations
- Visit this sensational Rem Koolhaas-designed glass building on the edge of the Museumpark and the Westzeedijk. Kunsthal is one of the country’s top cultural institutions and houses seven exhibition spaces.
Stroll around the historic Delfshaven neighbourhood which emerged relatively unscathed after World War II.
While the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen (Rotterdam’s art museum) is closed, this fascinating and unique temporary building has popped up next door to showcase 151,000 artworks in climate-controlled storage. You can see art restorers at work behind the scenes.

Haarlem
Just a short hop from Amsterdam, Haarlem brims with rich history, medieval character, and an authentic charm of its own. The city's 'brown cafes' offer a traditional Dutch pub experience, while its diverse culinary scene, undoubtedly influenced by the capital, ranges from Michelin-starred restaurants to neighbourhood eateries. Despite its modest size, Haarlem also packs a punch for culture: the Frans Hals Museum features an exemplary 17th-century art collection, and the Teylers Museum is the Netherlands' oldest, with exhibits spanning art, natural history, and science.

Recommendations
- Drift through Haarlem's canals and rivers on a rental boat. If you've got all day, the five-hour Mooie Nel route is a great way to explore the city from the water.
Spend a day at the Kennemerland National Park. The rugged dunes create a rolling landscape that contrasts with the rest of the country's flat terrain. You'll find miles of walking and cycling paths, as well as swimming lakes and the sea.
Join the locals in an afternoon drink in one of the café terraces on the main square – it's great spot for cathedral views and people watching.
