There’s real drama in the setting of this fortified hilltop town, which regularly pulls awards as one of the most picturesque rural communities in northern France. Cobbled streets and a wonderful set-piece main square all add to Cassel’s old-world charm.

Recommendations
- Visit the belltower, home to an impressive 40 bells. The current tower is the third to exist on the site, the first, built in 1112 was rebuilt in 1940 following a fire and the second didn’t survive World War II. A bell sounds every quarter hour and all 40 chime on Monday mornings to signal market day.
- Relax and unwind on a stroll by the river, along the ancient ruins and through the pretty cobbled streets to soak up Bergues’ historic atmosphere - it's believed the original fort was built in 857.
