Marseille

Founded by Phocaeans in 600 BC, Marseille is France’s oldest city. Since then it has become home to people from across Europe and North Africa, creating a diverse and vibrant culture. The relaxed port, ancient Le Panier neighbourhood and lively streets create a unique atmosphere not to be missed, plus beyond the old port is the Plage des Catalans, a great city beach with fabulous sunsets.

Recommendations

  • Explore the Chateau d’If, the 14th century fortress immortalised in The Count of Monte Cristo, in the Bay of Marseille.
  • Take a trip to Parc National des Calanques for amazing walks along limestone cliffs and down to the jewel-blue water. There are many coves tucked away along these rocky outcrops, ideal for impromptu dips, and Bleu Evasion runs boat trips from Marseille which include opportunities for swimming (snorkelling equioment provided). Sormiou and Callelongue, roughly halfway between Marseille and Cassis, are popular spots, and the Calanque de Sugiton is particularly idyllic.

  • Take a boat out to the small fishing port of L'Estaque where many famous artists have lived and painted over the centuries, including Paul Cézanne. Don't miss trying the local chickpea delicacy, panisses. Find details of the 30-minute ferry shuttle from the Old Harbour here (take the bus in the off season).
