Zürich

At the northern tip of the lake that shares its name, Zürich is Europe's leading economic hub. However, scratch beneath the surface of Zürich's financial reputation and you'll find an attractive Altstadt (old town) and, to the west, a post-industrial district filled with cool bars, art collectives and fashion upstarts.

Recommendations

  • Climb Zürich's mountain, Uetliberg, which towers an impressive 850m high and offers great views of the city and its lake. There are hiking and biking trails here, and you can also book tobogganing and paragliding.

  • For a wonderful way to see the city, take to the water. Head out on a boat trip on Zürichsee, the city's namesake lake, or a flat bottomed boat tour of Limmat river from Landesmuseum station.

  • Pay a visit to a football-lover's heaven, the FIFA World Football Museum. Even those who are less than mad about the beautiful game will find plenty to keep them entertained among the interactive exhibits and events.

Zell am See

Situated on a mini-peninsula on an Alpine lake, Zell am See is a picturesque town home to the Schmittenhöhe ski area. Come spring, it's clear why Zell is one of the most well-loved resorts for fair-weather exploring; meadows, the Grossglockner mountains and nearby Hohe Tauern National Park provide walking trails to suit all abilities, and Lake Zell becomes the perfect temperature for a dip or an evening drink aboard a lake cruise.

Recommendations

  • 1965-metre-high Schmittenhöhe is a perfect destination for skiing, but also for activities like winter hiking and snowshoeing. Schmittenhöhe certainly deserves its nickname of Panorama Mountain, and exploring it at a slower place means you can freely stop to admire the views of Lake Zell.

  • For unmatched views of the surrounding mountains, take a boat trip on Lake Zell. There are four boats to choose from, ranging from the "nostalgia ship" Libelle, launched in 1947, to the 255-seater MS Schmittenhöhe, with panoramic windows. This largest of the four boats is also wheelchair-accessible.

  • Tauern Spa is a welcome break after a couple of days on the slopes, with saunas, steam rooms, fresh- and saltwater pools and spa treatments including massages. There's also a separate water park area which is great for kids.

Kitzbühel

Located at the base of Hahnenkamm Peak, this small Alpine town is one of Europe's most renowned winter resorts, best known for the treacherous Hahnenkamm World Cup. Even in summer, Kitzbühel retains its adventurous spirit, with ample opportunities for summer hiking, horse-back riding and canyoning. Regular open-air folk and brass band performances make the perfect accompaniment to alfresco dining in one of the town's many Gault Millau-awarded restaurants.
