This small, ancient city is filled with remarkable examples of Roman architecture, most notably a breathtaking 1st-century amphitheatre. With spellbindingly pretty streets, enchanting squares and romantic fountains, you can see why Shakespeare made it the setting of his most famous love story.

- Take the funicular railway up the hill to Castel San Pietro to marvel at the stunning views of the city - a fab spot for an evening drink.
- Head to Piazza San Zeno on Sunday mornings to browse the large flea market, the stall holders sell all kinds of objects - look out for the classic Italian antiques.
- Cross the Adige River to explore Veronetta, the laid-back area is popular with students and has great street food and bars. The area is also known as Little Jerusalem as medieval pilgrims on their way there were reminded of Jerusalem by the steep hills and cypress trees. Be sure to visit Giardino Giusti - an exquisite example of a 16th century landscaped garden.
