A pretty town on the central east coast of Skye, with some of Scotland's best restaurants and cosiest pubs. It's a good base for exploring the island, with the dramatic landscapes of the Cuillin Range to the west and the Trotternish Peninsula to the north.

  • Scramble your way through the island's rivers and canyons on a day's gorge walking adventure. Climb up rock faces, jump into deep plunge pools, slide down waterfalls and spot an array of wildlife on the way.

  • Rent a bike or e-bike to explore Skye on two wheels. Real Scottish Journeys can deliver your e-bike to you if you're staying in Portree, or arrange a suitable rendezvous.

  • From Portree, you can walk the 3km Scorrybreac Circuit around the north side of the bay. You'll find many a picnic bench ideally situated to take in the spectacular views out to sea, and across to the Island of Raasay. Keep an eye out for dolphins!
