Avignon
Avignon is a beautiful Medieval city with a rich history visible in its architecture. Surrounded by towering sandstone ramparts and its famous unfinished bridge, the old town is full of winding streets, an impressive collection of museums and galleries, and the Palais des Papes – the striking fortress that was home of the Pope for a period in the 14th century.

Recommendations
Avignon was home to seven successive popes in the 1300s and is still known as the City of Popes today. Their former residence is also the largest Gothic palace in the world.
Enjoy the peace and quiet of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms d'Avignon. Founded in 1150, the structure has been continually modified throughout the centuries, which has resulted in a unique mix of Romanesque, Baroque and Gothic architecture. Head to the Jardin des Doms park next door for views of the river.
Cross the Rhône on the free ferry to Île Barthelasse (Barthelasse Island). The 1700-acre rural area is perfect for walking, cycling and birdwatching. There’s also a large open-air pool, in case you fancy a dip.
