Bruges
Known as the 'Venice of the North', Bruges is a town of leafy canals, gingerbread houses and cobbled picture-perfect streets. However, there's more to Bruges than meets the eye, with a fascinating history of lace production, and a beer culture so good it's been declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Recommendations
Uncover the founding work of the Flemish Primitives and some of Belgium's most influential modern artists in the intimate Groeninge Museum. Works range from early oil paintings by Jan van Eyck (who was active in Bruges throughout his career) to key surrealist works by René Magritte.
Bruges' Christmas festival, Winter Glow, is the perfect place to cosy up with a hot chocolate (or something stronger from the winter bar). There are pretty light trails, two Christmas markets, an ice rink and a whole host of festive events to enjoy.
Take the day for a leisurely cycle or boat trip (there's even an historic paddle steamer) from Bruges to Damme, a lovely community with some superb restaurants.
