The Roseate Villa

Byway favourite
Featured hotel
From Sawday's, this is a comfortable and friendly boutique-style hotel in the middle of town but hidden away on a quiet side street overlooking Henrietta Park – seven acres of green space opened to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee; perfect to give the kids or dogs a run around.  Stroll for five minutes to magnificent Pulteney Bridge; the station isn’t much further. You can hire bikes in town, then follow a towpath along the canal out into the country. Breakfast – served in an airy dining room – is excellent: smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, buttermilk pancakes, the full cooked works. Bread is baked overnight by the in-house baker who also makes cakes and scones for an indulgent afternoon tea.

Recommendations

  • Take the bus out to the surrounding farmland to visit the local Bath Soft Cheese Company farm where you can savour one of their cheese toasties for a local, zero-food mile lunch! A stroll through the fields to the river makes a perfect post-lunch walk.

  • Enjoy a few hours of pure relaxation at Thermae Bath Spa, taking in the views from the rooftop pool.

  • Take to the hills and enjoy a ramble in the surrounding Somerset countryside on one of our suggested walks.

Bistro Lotte

Featured hotel
This stylish Sawday's hotel and french-style bistro is in the heart of Frome, with bright, comfortable rooms overlooking the pretty cobbled street Lotte and her team love to make you feel at ease. The bistro hums with happy people, windows are flung open in the summer and comfortable bedrooms above have their own entrance so you can come and go as you please. Step down to the restaurant for a French platter breakfast of zingy juices, croissants, ham, cheese, eggs, sourdough toast and good coffee. Lunches are served until late (everyone loves the buckwheat crêpes) and the convivial vibe continues into the evening with candlelit tables and good-value suppers. Book the atmospheric private dining room upstairs for a special event. Explore Frome with its quirky shops, food and vintage markets, theatre and pretty cobbled streets. Pop back to the bistro for tea and cake in the afternoon, book a table for the evening.

Timbrell's Yard

Timbrell's Yard

Featured hotel
From our friends at Sawday's, Timbrell’s Yard stands close to the bridge in Bradford-on-Avon with beautiful views across the river to the churchyard. Outside, a terrace at the front catches the sun, with this 18th-century listed building standing grandly behind. It’s a lovely spot, good enough for Samuel Spode to paint; a copy of his work hangs in the restaurant, the real thing waits in the town’s museum. Inside, you get that winning combination of stylish rooms, lovely food and well-kept ales, with cakes and coffee available all day. You’ll find stripped floors, hanging lamps, exposed stone walls, then sofas in front of an open fire.

Lacock

A quintessential English village often used for TV and film settings, including Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, and Pride and Prejudice. Most of Lacockโ€™s buildings are owned by the National Trust, who work to preserve the town. Soak up the history of the half-timbered 18th-century houses and the 14th-century church and tithe barn.
Sign of the Angel

Your accommodation2 nights

Sign of the Angel

Featured hotel
Occupying centre-stage in one the prettiest of all Cotswold villages, the Sign of the Angel from Sawday's is a genuine period piece: all chalky whitewash and wonky beams, artful oak furniture and flagstoned passageways. The inn was taken over by energetic young brothers Tom and Jack in 2014, and has been impeccably renovated to trumpet its age. The owners are from farming stock, and it shows in Head Chef Dan’s menu. Everything from the bread to the sorbets are locally sourced and homemade. Enjoy a cream tea by an open fire in winter, a glass of wine in the pretty garden in summer and two dining rooms for lunch and dinner. Bedrooms and a small sitting room for guests are nice and quiet upstairs. Wake to a smashing breakfast from granola and yogurt to pancakes or Full English with local green back bacon and field mushrooms, sausages made in-house and tasty vegan versions. Wander the pretty village feeling like somebody in a film set – you are!
